Mark Lyle Miller, 59, was killed in a hit-and-run while cycling on U.S. 78 in Leeds, Alabama, on Wednesday, December 15, 2021. A witness stopped to help and called for emergency care, but the driver who struck him fled the scene. Investigators found a mile-long trail of antifreeze and said the fleeing vehicle was a red car likely suffering serious front-end damage, especially to the radiator, and was headed toward Irondale.

The Jefferson County Coroner later identified the victim as Mark Lyle Miller of Birmingham. Dr. Miller was a veterinarian, a founding member of the Emergency and Specialty Animal Medical Center, an Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine alumnus, and a veteran of the Army’s 20th Special Forces. He is survived by his wife, daughter, parents, and sister. No arrests or suspect identifications have been announced.

If anyone has information about the red car or that stretch of U.S. 78 on December 15, 2021, please come forward.
