Jason Matthew Kirkland was 27 when he died on July 5, 2021, while serving a 15-year sentence at Donaldson Correctional Facility near Bessemer, Alabama. Authorities reported he became stuck in the door of his cell and suffocated; his body was found in his private cell at about 4:40 p.m. and he was pronounced dead roughly 20 minutes later.
The circumstances prompted questions about supervision and inmate safety at the facility. Reports say two correctional officers were later arrested and charged with criminally negligent homicide, accused of failing to render aid to Kirkland while on duty — an alleged failure that prosecutors say contributed to his death. The officers remained employed by the Department of Corrections until their arrests nearly a year after the incident.
Who has information about Kirkland’s time at Donaldson or about what happened on July 5, 2021?
