Christopher Gilbert, 39, was shot and killed in the pre-dawn hours of Sunday, December 26, 2021, at about 2 a.m. at the John England Manor housing complex on Dinah Washington Avenue in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Officers responding to reports of a shooting found Gilbert with multiple gunshot wounds; he was taken to a local hospital and died shortly after arrival.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit investigated, interviewing witnesses and processing evidence, and by that evening identified a suspect. Thirty-year-old Calvin Lee Willis was arrested by the Special Response Team and charged with murder in Gilbert’s death. Investigators also linked Willis to another shooting earlier that night in which one person suffered minor injuries; Willis faces an attempted murder charge as well. Because Willis is a convicted felon, authorities say he was prohibited from possessing a firearm. Bond for the murder charge was set at $150,000. Motive remained under investigation.
