In the early morning hours of November 4, 2022, firefighters in the 400 block of Weaver Drive in Bessemer, Alabama, responded to a mobile home fire and found the body of 27-year-old Hispanic/Latino man Sebedeo Nunez inside the charred remains. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office determined Nunez had been shot and that the fire was likely set to conceal the homicide. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office opened a homicide investigation and appealed for public help in the days and weeks that followed.

No suspects were publicly identified and no arrests were announced, and the investigation later grew cold. The case prompted concern in the local Hispanic community about whether crimes against Hispanic individuals were receiving equivalent attention and resources. The family and friends of Sebedeo Nunez continue to seek answers and justice.

If anyone has information about Sebedeo Nunez or the circumstances of the fire and shooting, please come forward to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
