On the evening of January 11, 2022, 15-year-old Taevion Fife of Gadsden was found lying in the road at 13th Street and Christine Avenue in Anniston with a gunshot wound. Emergency responders treated him at the scene and he was taken to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Anniston police identified 19-year-old Nathan Averi Higgins of Oxford as the suspect after investigators learned the two had argued shortly before the shooting. Higgins was located in Lincoln and taken into custody; he was charged with murder and booked into the Calhoun County Jail.

Higgins’s mother told investigators the shooting began during a disputed firearm transaction: Fife had allegedly arranged to buy a semi-automatic handgun, was handed the gun to test fire, then said he would not pay. She said Fife fired first and Higgins returned fire with a second handgun. The investigation is ongoing.
