William Cody Vaughn, 29, of Blountsville, Alabama, died September 14, 2023, after a confrontation in the Highland Lake area of Blount County. Multiple reports had come in that day about attempted break-ins near Sugar Land Lake, with Vaughn identified as a suspect. Later, a woman checking her mail on County Road 29 said she felt threatened by Vaughn’s hurried approach, retreated inside and locked her door. Vaughn then tried to gain entry and the woman called 911.

The woman’s husband arrived as deputies were en route and confronted Vaughn, who had gotten into his vehicle and, according to the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, displayed a firearm. The homeowner shot Vaughn; deputies administered first aid until paramedics arrived and Vaughn was taken to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Sheriff’s Office later concluded the shooting was an act of self-defense and announced no charges would be filed. A memorial service was held September 18, 2023, at Lemley Funeral Home in Oneonta.
