Benjamin Craig Sharpton, 62, of Gadsden was fatally shot on the morning of August 11, 2023, in Argo, Alabama. Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies responded about 10:35 a.m. to a domestic-related shooting in the 8800 block of Gadsden Highway and found Sharpton had been killed. Witnesses at the scene identified the shooter as his 58-year-old ex-wife, Grace Dunaway Yancey. Yancey was taken into custody and charged with intentional murder; she was held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail under the provisions of Aniah’s Law. The specific motive remains under investigation.

Sharpton, born September 29, 1960, in Birmingham, owned Sharpton’s Auto Repair and was remembered for his kindness, a love of NASCAR, Alabama football, Elvis Presley, and dogs. He is survived by two children, Amber and Benjamin Jr., grandchildren, and brothers; funeral services were held August 16, 2023, and he was buried at Steele Cemetery.
