Jani Barker was a 15-year-old freshman at Fairfield High Preparatory School who loved to dance and cook. Her family called her Cupcake and described her as always happy and special; she would have turned 16 the following month. On the afternoon of Saturday, May 27, 2023, at about 3:43 p.m., Jani was shot in the 5000 block of Parkway Alley in Fairfield and was taken to Children’s of Alabama, where she died of her injuries.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office investigated and arrested a 15-year-old boy identified as Jani’s boyfriend; he was held on a murder charge and remained in juvenile detention as of June 2023. Two days after Jani’s death, 17-year-old Tatyanna Hannah was also shot and killed in Fairfield; detectives said they believed the two shootings were connected. Investigators later arrested 20-year-old twins Ke’Andre and Ke’Autay Fuller on capital murder warrants in Hannah’s death and on multiple counts including attempted murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle; the twins were being held with no bond as of June 2023.
