On the night of December 20, 2023, 42-year-old Juan Tierney Hall, a Tuscaloosa County detention officer, was fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire at The Lory of Hoover apartment complex on Emerald Point Drive in Hoover, Alabama. The shooting occurred shortly before 10:00 p.m. and also left a 33-year-old resident with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office account, Hall was off duty when he knocked on the resident’s apartment door. When the resident answered, Hall allegedly opened fire, striking the resident. The resident then retrieved his own firearm and shot back. Hall fled, collapsed in a nearby grassy area, and was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the head. The motive for Hall’s actions is described as unclear, and the sheriff’s office has investigated the incident as a homicide.

Hall was the brother of Tuscaloosa Police Department investigator Dornell Cousette, who was shot and killed in the line of duty in 2019. No arrests or charges had been publicly announced in the days following the shooting. If anyone knows more about what happened at The Lory of Hoover that night or has relevant information, please share what can help the ongoing inquiry.
