Philstavious Dowdell was 18 when he was killed on the evening of Saturday, April 15, 2023, at a Sweet 16 birthday celebration held at Mahogany Masterpiece Dance Studio in Dadeville, Alabama. He was one of four people who died that night and one of 36 people affected, with 32 others wounded.
Dowdell was a celebrated student-athlete at Dadeville High School — a wide receiver and sprinter who was committed to play football at Jacksonville State University. Law enforcement later arrested six people and charged them with four counts of reckless murder: Ty Reik McCullough, 17; Travis McCullough, 16; Wilson LaMar Hill Jr., 20; Johnny Letron Brown, 20; Willie George Brown Jr., 19; and an unnamed 15-year-old. The two McCullough brothers are to be tried as adults. Some reports say the shooting began after armed individuals were asked to leave and refused, while defense attorneys contend text messages from victims’ phones could point to self-defense; authorities have not released an official motive because the investigation remains active.
Did anyone attend the party or know the teens involved and have details that could help clarify what happened that night?
