On the night of March 15, 2023, 45-year-old Jonathan Christian Hamff was walking along the shoulder of Interstate 59 south near the Roebuck Parkway exit ramp in Birmingham when a vehicle struck him. Hamff was pronounced dead at the scene at about 11:19 p.m. The driver did not stop and fled, turning the incident into a hit-and-run homicide investigation.

Birmingham police opened an investigation but, as of the latest available report, the driver and vehicle have not been identified and no arrests have been announced. The case remains open while authorities seek information that could lead to the person responsible for Hamff’s death.
