John Anthony Jackson, a 43-year-old Black man, was shot and killed in broad daylight on May 12, 2023, in Birmingham, Alabama. At about 1:45 p.m. gunfire rang out on the 1000 block of Elm Street Southwest; officers found Jackson unresponsive near a vehicle with a fatal gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced him deceased at the scene.

Investigators described the shooting as not random and said Jackson appeared to have been specifically targeted. Witnesses reported hearing many shots and seeing a vehicle speed away from the scene. The Birmingham Police Homicide Unit opened the city’s 40th homicide investigation of the year and appealed for public help, but no suspects have been publicly identified or arrested.
