Lee Earl Moss was a 71-year-old man who spent many weekends at a family home on the 1700 block of 48th Street in Birmingham’s Ensley neighborhood, keeping company, cooking, and watching children in the yard. On the night of July 15, 2023, ShotSpotter triggered a call about gunfire around 11 p.m.; police were later told two people had been shot. Officers found Moss and his friend Daryl Maurice Jones suffering from gunshot wounds in the backyard. Both were taken to UAB Hospital and died a short time later.

Investigators said an unknown shooter or shooters opened fire while the men were outside and indicated at least one victim appeared to have been targeted. Family members described the evenings as ordinary and consistent, noting the men sometimes nodded off in the yard. Reports said at least 10 shots were fired and that a third friend had been there earlier but left before the shooting. Authorities asked the public for tips and said no arrests had been announced.

Did anyone in Ensley see or hear anything in that area on the night of July 15, 2023?
