On the afternoon of Saturday, December 2, 2023, a shootout in the Inglenook neighborhood of Birmingham left 24-year-old Courtney Spencer dead. Calls to Birmingham 911 just before 4 p.m. brought East Precinct officers to the 3400 block of 38th Place North, where a vehicle in a driveway contained Spencer, a Black male, with an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced him deceased at the scene.

Investigators say evidence shows a shootout occurred in the area and that multiple houses nearby were struck by gunfire. The Birmingham Police Department has opened a homicide investigation; no arrests or suspects have been publicly identified.
