On April 29, 2017 in Barrow, Alaska, 21-year-old Alaskan Native Barrow Dan Akootchook was shot and killed during a house gathering that turned chaotic. A single round tore through the room, people dove for cover and fled into the cold, and when the confusion ended Akootchook lay mortally wounded.

Early reports and charging documents describe a dispute at the party, an ejection from the home, and a violent return. Authorities issued urgent alerts seeking an armed and dangerous man; police later took Douglas George Spear Jr. into custody and identified him as the suspect in the killing. The arrest was made without injury.

Memorial pages and community notices noted the loss and the shock felt across the town. Does anyone who lived in Barrow at the time have information about the gathering or what led to the dispute?
