Billy Jens Leavitt, 43, was found shot to death inside his home on the 5000 block of Laura Maddison Street in Barrow (now Utqiagvik) during the predawn hours of September 22, 2016. Police were dispatched at 5:13 a.m.; investigators said early on that the death was not a suicide and that those involved had been identified. A Smith & Wesson .500-caliber revolver was recovered near the body.

Within a week a charging document in Barrow District Court named Leavitt’s 20-year-old stepson, Robert Bobby Clark, accused of shooting him after a violent, alcohol-fueled confrontation in a crowded house. Clark reportedly called police from a neighbor’s home around 5:15 a.m., walked out with his hands up, and had a blood-alcohol content of .194 when arrested; he alternated between saying he was afraid and calling the shooting accidental.

The North Slope Borough expressed condolences and said there was no ongoing public threat as prosecutors reviewed the case. Public tributes list only Leavitt’s age, date of death, and hometown. Does anyone have information about the events that night or knew Billy and his family?
