Chris Heyman was an 18-year-old White male deckhand killed on September 7, 1982, among eight people found dead in and around the 58-foot seiner Investor off Craig, Alaska. The boat’s owner Mark Coulthurst, his pregnant wife Irene, their children Kimberly and John, and three other teenage crewmen also died. Investigators concluded the victims had been shot—likely with a .22-caliber firearm—before the killer set the vessel on fire, and the Investor later burned and sank while under tow.

Eyewitness reports described a lone figure piloting the Investor away from the harbor at dawn and a young man in the ship’s skiff waving off rescuers as the boat burned. Witness descriptions varied: a stocky man with light-brown hair in a red-and-black plaid jacket, and separately a slight young man in a baseball cap with a pockmarked face. A weapon was never recovered and the blaze destroyed key evidence.

In September 1984 former deckhand John Kenneth Peel was arrested, tried, and eventually acquitted in a 1988 retrial; the state later settled a wrongful-prosecution suit. Authorities closed the case without naming another suspect. If anyone knew Chris, his crewmates, or saw the Investor that morning, please come forward with what was seen or remembered.
