Michael Mike Stewart was 19 when he died in Craig, Alaska, on September 7, 1982. A teenage deckhand and cousin to skipper Mark Coulthurst, he was aboard the 58-foot seiner Investor when the vessel returned to Craig at the end of the season. Within days the boat was found burning at anchor outside town; when investigators boarded after the fire was put out, all on board had been killed, reportedly with a .22-caliber firearm that was never recovered.

The eight victims included the Coulthurst family and several young deckhands: Michael Mike Stewart, Mark and Irene Coulthurst and their children Kimberly and John, Jerome Keown, Dean Moon, and Chris Heyman. Witnesses later said the Investor eased away from the harbor under a lone figure shortly before the blaze. Detectives focused on someone familiar with the docks and arrested 24-year-old John Kenneth Peel in September 1984; his first trial ended in a hung jury and a 1988 retrial resulted in acquittal on arson and eight counts of first-degree murder. The killings remain known as Alaska’s worst unsolved mass homicide.

Does anyone have memories of Craig or the Investor weekend that could help keep these names from being forgotten?
