Debra Jean Vaughan was 36 when she left her mother’s house in Greer’s Ferry, Arkansas, at about 6:00 a.m. on July 24, 1993, intending to return to the trailer she shared with her husband, Gerald W. Vaughan, to collect personal belongings. The couple’s relationship had been volatile; the day before she vanished they had a physical altercation and Debra told her mother, Dixie Bowling, she planned to leave Gerald permanently.
After she left her mother’s home, the timeline becomes unclear. Gerald later told Debra’s mother that Debra called him a few days later and said she planned to live transiently, and claimed she had a history of long absences. Debra’s mother disputed that, saying her daughter always stayed in touch. A formal police inquiry did not begin until January 1994. Some of Debra’s personal effects were later found in a junk pile in Cleburne County, and her blue 1980 Chevrolet Monte Carlo has never been recovered. Gerald was the last known person to see her and is considered a person of interest; no charges have been filed.
What can readers who knew Debra, her movements in July 1993, or the whereabouts of that Monte Carlo add to this investigation?
