John Mitchell Carroll, known as Mitch, was 17 when he was last seen in Susanville, California, on September 23, 1975. His sister drove him to the parking lot of a Raley’s grocery store around 3:00 p.m. for what he believed would be a brief Forest Service job interview. She watched him get into a white van, which she found odd because Forest Service vehicles then were typically green. The van left the lot and Carroll was never seen again.

At the time he disappeared he was 5 feet 7 inches, about 140 pounds, with blond hair, blue eyes, glasses and a birthmark on his temple. He was wearing a white t-shirt, Levi’s pants and boots. The Susanville Police Department lists the case as number 11588. Dental records are on file; it is unknown whether fingerprints or DNA are available. Few details about the investigation have been released and the case remains unsolved.

Did anyone in Susanville in 1975 see a white van or remember a young man named Mitch meeting someone that afternoon?
