A neighbor dispute in Mount Vernon, Alabama, ended with a fatal shooting on September 17, 2024. Tavoris McConnell Sr., 35, was found in a grassy field near Shepard Lake Road East after being shot; medical responders pronounced him dead at the scene. McConnell, a father of five, was remembered by family as lively, the funniest person and the best cook they knew.

Witnesses told Mobile County Sheriff’s Office investigators the confrontation began as an argument about property between McConnell and neighbor Daryl Files, and that the verbal fight turned violent when Files allegedly shot McConnell. One nearby resident, however, said no arguing was heard and instead recalled a loud noise like an explosion, later seeing McConnell on the ground with blood from his neck. Investigators took a suspect into custody for questioning; detectives interviewed Daryl Files and the case was to be presented to a grand jury in consultation with the District Attorney’s office.

If anyone witnessed the incident on Shepard Lake Road East or has information about the argument that led to McConnell’s death, please share what is known.
