Qylon Qy Jamari Thompson was a 3-year-old Black boy shot in Shorter, Alabama, on May 22, 2024. The wound was not fatal immediately; he was taken to Children’s of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham and died there on May 24, 2024. Family identified his parents as Taina Haggan-Ford and Quarick Thompson.

Relatives remembered Qylon as lively, feisty, considerate and polite. On June 20, 2024, family members held a graveside balloon release and used the gathering to urge parents and caregivers to secure firearms and keep them out of children’s reach. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office publicly emphasized that firearm accidents in homes with children are preventable when guns are secured.

Available incident descriptions characterize the shooting as an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot and explicitly list no perpetrator. Did anyone in the Shorter area see or hear anything that could clarify how the gun became accessible to Qylon?
