Dwight Carlton Jones, 46, was shot and killed in Fort Mitchell, Alabama, on the morning of Tuesday, December 12, 2023. Deputies from the Russell County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunshots on Apache Trail at about 8:45 a.m. and found Jones suffering from gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators quickly identified a suspect. Nineteen-year-old Kamali Jones was located shortly after the shooting near Moss Oak Drive and Muscle Wood Drive and was taken into custody. Authorities say the shooting grew out of a domestic dispute: Kamali Jones had a relationship with the victim’s niece and had gone to the residence that morning to see their two-day-old baby. An argument reportedly broke out in the front yard and escalated to fatal gunfire. The weapon believed to have been used was a nine-millimeter handgun. Charges include murder and shooting into an occupied residence.
