On the evening of August 27, 2023, 19-year-old Khiya King was inside a home at 908 South Glover Street in Demopolis, Alabama, when gunfire erupted at about 8:26 p.m. First responders found King with a gunshot wound, provided aid, and she was taken to Whitfield Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators recovered multiple shell casings from different caliber weapons outside the residence, and said the house had been specifically targeted. With assistance from the 17th Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force, police executed search warrants at two other Demopolis homes on August 29 and reported finding several firearms and other evidence. Five people were arrested in connection with King’s death: three 22-year-old adults from Demopolis — Robert Lee Mosley III, Jaquan T. Brown, and Markell Hood — and two juveniles; all five were charged with capital murder. A graveside service for King was held September 2, 2023, at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
