Connor James Mullins was 13 when he was shot and killed on February 1, 2023, in Phenix City, Alabama. According to the district attorney, Connor was with his brother and a friend on a family property on Windtree Drive, described as mischief and rummaging through stuff. The land belonged to the family of 50-year-old Tywoana Jakes, who lived across the street.

Jakes, also identified as Tywoana Anderson-Jakes, came out of her home armed and confronted the boys. As two of the boys ran, Connor bent down and was struck by a single shot to the neck; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said there was no indication Connor was armed and no known prior relationship between Jakes and the boys.

Jakes was arrested and charged with capital murder, the charge enhanced because the victim was under 14. She was initially released on a $100,000 bond, but after testimony from Connor’s parents and a neighbor a judge later ordered her held without bond pending trial. Investigators were also looking into an unrelated 2022 incident in which Jakes was accused of shooting at someone on her property; no charges in that matter had been filed.
