On November 25, 2022, Lashawn Poke, a 41-year-old Black man, was shot and killed near Taylor, Alabama. Poke was on a holiday pass from the Houston County Community Corrections program and was visiting a woman at her home when an altercation broke out around 3:30 a.m. after the woman’s estranged husband, 35-year-old Brent Guilford, arrived. Authorities say Guilford allegedly shot Poke. By 5 a.m. Guilford had surrendered to the Houston County Sheriff’s Office and was taken into custody without incident; he was charged with capital murder and held without bond.
Poke was serving a sentence for promoting prison contraband and faced a pending domestic violence–strangulation charge; he was reportedly scheduled for release on December 13, 2022. Court records also show the woman had filed for a protection from abuse order against Guilford weeks before the shooting. Does anyone have information about the events that night or knew Poke or the people involved?
