A Sunday afternoon in Tuscaloosa turned deadly on March 13, 2022, when 25-year-old Marcus Winston Jr. was standing in the front yard of a home on the 3000 block of 19th Street. At about 4:30 p.m. a white sedan with three to four occupants drove past and occupants opened fire into the yard. Winston and a 2-year-old boy, Ashton Jones, who was also outside and not related to Winston, were both struck. Winston was pronounced dead at the scene; Ashton Jones was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center and died that evening.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit identified three persons of interest and located them quickly. One, Kaleria Alicia Gilbert, was questioned and later ruled out. On March 14 police arrested 19-year-old Tyrese Laquon Bell after a pursuit that ended in a wreck; he was charged with two counts of murder and bond was set at $3 million. Court records say Bell admitted driving the vehicle and told investigators a juvenile in the backseat fired the shots. That juvenile was arrested the same night and charged with capital murder; their identity was not released because of age. The case later went to trial and a Tuscaloosa County jury found Tyrese Bell guilty of murder in the deaths of Winston and Ashton.

If anyone witnessed the shooting or was in the area that afternoon, information could still help piece together what happened.
