Omar Childers, 19, was found dead in his vehicle at the Springhill apartment complex in Tuscaloosa just after 11 p.m. on April 15, 2021. Officers determined he had been struck by gunfire and the investigation was classified as a homicide.
Investigators initially had no immediate suspects. The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit later obtained a warrant charging 26-year-old Darren Childers, identified as the victim’s cousin, with capital murder and began searching for him. Darren Childers was not located in the hours after the shooting.
The next afternoon a woman who parked at a church on Sanders Ferry Road called 911 about a stationary vehicle. Officers found Darren Childers dead in the driver’s seat; preliminary findings suggested a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences was to confirm the official cause of death.
If anyone knew Omar’s movements that night or saw either vehicle near Springhill on April 15, what can you share?
