Michaelle Marie Champagne, a 30-year-old Belgian national, disappeared after last confirmed contact on March 9, 1993, when she phoned her parents from Washington D.C. She had recently returned to the U.S. from Belgium with her boyfriend, Darryl Matlen, and said she planned a few days of sightseeing before going back to her home in Spokane, Washington. Originally a national-level soccer player, she moved to the U.S. in 1990 with an American military husband; the couple divorced in late 1992.
Matlen did not report her missing until September 8, 1993, telling police they had broken up on March 17 and later claiming an unconfirmed sighting of her in June riding a motorcycle in Spokane. Investigators found Matlen had used her credit cards, sold furniture from her storage and a jointly owned car, and that he returned to Spokane alone on March 12 and checked into a hotel — three days after her last call. Champagne’s last known address was the Starlight Motel on South Geiger Boulevard. Police suspect homicide and renewed inquiries in 2011, including family DNA collection for comparison to unidentified remains, but the case remains unsolved.
Did anyone in the Spokane or D.C. area remember seeing Michaelle in March or April 1993, or have information about transactions tied to her cards or property?
