On the morning of January 3, 2020, two men were found dead from gunshot wounds on County Road 123 in Ozark, Alabama. The other victim was 30-year-old Anthony L. Rodriguez of Lakeland, Florida.

Investigators treated the scene as a double homicide and, citing evidence, believed the killings were drug-related. Within a day authorities identified two suspects from nearby Daleville. On January 4, 2020, 24-year-old Xavier R. Newsome was arrested at his home. A second suspect, 23-year-old Natavious Jamal Antwan Vaughn, was sought as armed and dangerous and was captured on January 10, 2020, near Enterprise by the U.S. Marshal Fugitive Task Force.

Both men were charged with multiple counts of capital murder, including capital murder during a robbery, capital murder of two or more persons, and capital murder while the victim is in a vehicle.
