On the morning of December 30, 2019, 63-year-old Randolph ’Randy’ Allen Cannon was found dead by the side of Shady Grove Lane in rural Hurtsboro, Alabama, after going out to walk his dog near property he owned. His wife discovered his body when he did not return, and the dog remained at his side. Investigators determined Cannon died of multiple gunshot wounds and opened a homicide investigation; the scene was secluded and there were no immediate witnesses.
A $5,000 reward generated tips that led detectives to a suspect. Authorities arrested 20-year-old Deontra Jones after, the sheriff says, Jones confessed. According to the sheriff’s account, Jones and a female companion were parked on the road when Cannon confronted them about trespassing; Jones then exited the vehicle, shot Cannon and chased him down the road before shooting him multiple times. The female companion provided a statement and has not been charged.
Was anyone in the Hurtsboro area on December 30 who saw a vehicle parked on Shady Grove Lane or who can add details about that morning?
