Tavaris Varis Honor, a 23-year-old Black man, and his mother, Catherine Mrs. Cat Honor, were found dead in their Fairfield, Alabama, home on 57th Street on June 3, 2019. The discovery followed a prior family tragedy: another of Catherine’s sons had been murdered in the same house in 2016.
No arrests or publicly identified suspects have been reported in the double homicide. The case was originally handled by the Fairfield Police Department; the lead detective retired in 2019. Later that year the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office took over law enforcement responsibilities for the city, but the sheriff’s office stated it was never formally asked to assume this investigation. Family members have expressed frustration at the stalled inquiry and the lack of answers.
The house on 57th Street remains a painful reminder for the family and community. Does anyone who knew Tavaris or Catherine, or who lived near 57th Street in 2019, have information that could help move this case forward?
