On the night of February 13, 2019, 19-year-old Gavin Cole was found wounded inside a wrecked vehicle near East 10th Street and South East Street in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Cole, a Caucasian male, was taken to a hospital in Tupelo, Mississippi, but died of his gunshot injuries. Authorities also discovered the body of 19-year-old Alontae Nalls in a wooded area near the Willie Green Recreation Center; the vehicle where Cole was found was later tied to Nalls.
A third victim, Reginald Thompson, was shot and survived, requiring surgery at UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Initial reports did not identify a motive, and no suspects or arrests were disclosed at the time. The shooting left a community mourning two young lives and seeking answers.
