Clifford Leon Herl, who went by Leon, was 28 when he disappeared after being seen at Cedar Bluff Reservoir on March 20, 2005. He had been living in Tyrone, Oklahoma, with a roommate and reportedly had a job interview lined up in Tulsa but was seen traveling the opposite direction to northwest Kansas. Campers at the reservoir described his behavior as unusual.
On March 21 his pickup truck was found abandoned about two miles from the reservoir and was impounded. A broken window was reported and his camping gear, clothing, wallet, driver’s license and Social Security card remained inside. A shredded note recovered and reassembled said something bad had happened and that he was afraid to contact authorities; some read it as suicidal though investigators reported no concrete evidence he took his own life.
In subsequent months, cabins near the reservoir were broken into and someone appeared to have been living in them; handwriting in one cabin resembled Leon’s but no link was confirmed. An abandoned tent about three quarters of a mile from the truck contained letters addressed to Satan; investigators considered the possibility Leon wrote them but found no proof. If anyone knew Leon, saw him near Cedar Bluff Reservoir in March 2005, or has information, please come forward.
