On the evening of January 8, 2019, 36-year-old Allah G. Bishop was shot and killed at the GWC Homes housing project on Martin Luther King Street in Selma, Alabama. Officers arriving at the scene found a vehicle on fire and Bishop fatally wounded in front of an apartment; he died there. Bishop was a Black male from the nearby community of Sprott.

Selma police identified a suspect within days. On January 14, 2019, 29-year-old David L. Lewis, also known by the street name Joe Dinero, was arrested after a multiagency effort. In August 2019 a Dallas County grand jury returned an indictment charging Lewis with murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied building, two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, and unlawfully breaking and entering into a motor vehicle; bond was set at $5 million. Bishop’s funeral was held January 12, 2019, at Provewell Baptist Church in Sprott.
