Monty Lewayne Davis was 29 when he was killed after a February 23, 2018 dispute that began over marijuana. An argument about stolen marijuana and money allegedly turned physical, and Key reportedly produced a pistol and shot Davis.
After the shooting, investigators say Key moved Davis’s body to the 300 block of Mulga Loop Road in a remote part of western Jefferson County and set the remains on fire. The next day, February 24, 2018, authorities responding to a brush fire found the burned remains; the medical examiner later confirmed Davis had been shot.
Jefferson County detectives, with assistance from the Metro Area Crime Center, identified Rajuar Akeil Key as the primary suspect, obtained a murder warrant on July 23, 2018, and by early August had taken him into custody and booked him into the Jefferson County Jail with bond set at $100,000.
If anyone knew Monty Davis, was at Key’s Eufaula Avenue residence on February 23, 2018, or has information about what happened that night, please come forward.
