Jaqueline Szczepanik was 43 when she and her husband, Vanderlei, and their 7-year-old son, Christopher, disappeared from Omaha, Nebraska, in mid-December 2009. The family, Brazilian missionaries living and working at the Christian Community Center in South Omaha while renovating the building, were last heard from around December 14 to 18, 2009; their personal effects and vehicles were reportedly left behind.

Investigators later treated the case as a homicide. Three Brazilian men who had worked for the family — Jose C. Oliveira-Coutinho, Valdeir Goncalves-Santos, and Elias Lourenco-Batista — became central to the inquiry. Court records show Oliveira-Coutinho was convicted of three first-degree murder counts, Goncalves-Santos cooperated with authorities and told investigators he and Lourenco-Batista killed the family at Oliveira-Coutinho’s direction, and Christopher’s remains were recovered from the Missouri River after Goncalves-Santos led investigators to an area connected to where the bodies had been dumped. Jacqueline and Vanderlei’s remains have not been recovered.

Did anyone in Omaha remember seeing the Szczepanik family or their vehicles in December 2009?
