John Wesley Brown, 59, was shot and killed on July 15, 2017, in Prattville, Alabama after a dispute about a piece of land and the mowing of a contested patch of grass. A retired U.S. Air Force veteran, Brown was married, a father and grandfather, and was active as a minister in his church community. He died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.

The argument on that Saturday involved Brown and his neighbor, 73-year-old Joseph Huffman, and reportedly turned violent when Huffman allegedly fired a shotgun, striking Brown. The Autauga County Sheriff’s Office investigated the shooting, and Huffman was arrested, charged with one count of murder, and held in the Autauga Metro Jail before being released on a $30,000 bond.

Anyone who knew John Brown, the land in dispute, or who witnessed the events that day is asked to share information.
