A dispute over loaned property in Dothan, Alabama, turned deadly on the evening of January 16, 2017. What began as a verbal argument in the parking lot of Sandher’s Grocery on Third Avenue escalated when Jeffrey Lloyd Culpepper, then 54, allegedly retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and shot 48-year-old Cornell Lamont Johnson. Johnson, a husband, father, grandfather and longtime Dothan resident who served in the United States Army, was found dead in the parking lot after officers responded to a shots fired call.
Several people believed to be involved were detained at the scene, and Culpepper was arrested after a multi-day investigation. He was charged with one count of murder in Johnson’s death and one count of attempted first-degree assault.
If anyone witnessed the confrontation in Sandher’s Grocery parking lot or has information about the dispute that preceded the shooting, please come forward.
