Del Hardy Lawson Jr, a 21-year-old African American man from Bessemer, died on September 23, 2016, after gunfire erupted in broad daylight at a Fairfield, Alabama Chevron on Lloyd Noland Parkway. Witnesses and investigators described a rapid two-man shootout near the pumps. Both men involved appeared to have been shooting at each other; one man tried to flee in a vehicle, struck a light pole and died at the scene. Lawson was taken to a hospital with critical injuries and did not survive. The other man killed in the exchange was identified as Darryl Dewayne Grace, 26, linking the two deaths to the same confrontation rather than separate incidents.
Fairfield’s police chief said officers were not looking for other suspects, leaving investigators to reconstruct what sparked the dispute and how it escalated to mutual lethal gunfire. Funeral services for Lawson were held October 1, 2016, at Christ Temple Deliverance Church in Birmingham, with burial at Oakland Cemetery. Does anyone have information about what led to that afternoon confrontation or witnessed the incident?
