On the evening of June 12, 2016, a card game in the Selmont community of Selma, Alabama, ended in gunfire that killed 27-year-old Jermaine Tarver of Lowndesboro. The argument began after comments about Tarver’s gold teeth by 23-year-old Vadarius Hall. Tarver tried to leave, but Hall armed himself and shot Tarver multiple times. A private vehicle took Tarver to Vaughan Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
During the chaos, 18-year-old La’Darris Dees, who had reportedly stayed in a vehicle during the argument, began firing at someone who was trying to help Tarver. Hall fled the state with assistance from two Selma women, 21-year-old Kenyatta Shantae Wilson and 19-year-old Jalysa Shanjetti Turner; they were later arrested on charges of first-degree hindering prosecution. Hall was located in Miami, Florida, and arrested. Dees faced charges including capital murder, attempted murder, and discharging a firearm into an unoccupied vehicle. In July 2019, Hall was convicted of murder, attempted murder, and discharging a firearm into an unoccupied vehicle and was sentenced to life in prison.
The shooting was one of 17 murders reported in Selma in 2016, the city’s highest total in over a decade. Does anyone have information about that night or knew Jermaine Tarver?
