On the evening of April 11, 2016, 20-year-old Thurston Yavari Allen, a Black man from Daleville, was found with two gunshot wounds at the Boulevard Apartments in Enterprise, Alabama. Officers responding to a 911 call rushed him to a local hospital, where he died hours later.

Witnesses said a young Black man in his early twenties ran from the scene in a light-colored compact car. The Enterprise Police Department identified and arrested Thomanta Jones in connection with the homicide. At a bond hearing, a judge reduced Jones’s bond from $350,000 to $75,000, a decision that Allen’s parents, Carlisha and Thurston Allen, publicly criticized as they described Jones as a menace and expressed fear he might be released. The assistant district attorney said the investigation remained ongoing and not all evidence had been shown to the judge.
