In the early morning hours of December 14, 2014, 18-year-old Auburn freshman and redshirting football player Jakell Lenard Mitchell was shot and killed after an off-campus party at the Tiger Lodge apartment complex in Auburn, Alabama. Mitchell had been at the party with his girlfriend, Ayanna Hughuley. A verbal altercation in the parking lot escalated, and according to Hughuley a third person — identified as the cousin of another man involved in the argument — produced a handgun and fired, striking Mitchell multiple times in the chest.
Auburn Police arrived on a shots-fired call about 12:25 a.m. and found Mitchell in a vehicle that was trying to leave the complex; he was taken by ambulance to East Alabama Medical Center and pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Authorities arrested 22-year-old Markale Deandra Hart of Camp Hill within hours — by 10:45 a.m. that same day — charging Hart with murder; Hart was taken to the Lee County jail and was already on probation for a prior burglary charge. Police said they did not expect further arrests.
Are there witnesses who were at Tiger Lodge that night or anyone with details about the confrontation who can help clarify what happened?
