Casey Anthony Payne was 38 when she was found dead from a shotgun blast to the chest inside a home in the 2200 block of Parkwood Drive in Anniston, Alabama on Memorial Day in the late spring of 2014. Police had responded to reports of gunfire and investigators processed the scene and interviewed witnesses.

A 46-year-old Anniston woman, Pam DeAnn Smith, was arrested and charged with murder in connection with Payne’s death. Investigators indicated the killing may have been connected to a personal relationship: Payne did not live at the Parkwood Drive residence and was reportedly involved with the homeowner’s daughter. Beyond the arrest and the charge, officials did not release further information.
