On the evening of May 6, 2014, 31-year-old Daniel Lanier Dawsey was found unresponsive on the ground in the 100 block of Eugene Street in Dothan, Alabama. Emergency responders took him to Southeast Alabama Medical Center around 8:30 p.m., and he died of a gunshot wound about an hour later after a physical altercation.
Authorities identified Emanuel Bryant as the suspect in the shooting; he was described as a Black male, 6 feet 1 inch, about 160 pounds, and considered armed and dangerous. Bryant was arrested on May 8, 2014, and charged with murder. A Houston County jury later convicted him of felony manslaughter, and Circuit Court Judge Butch Binford sentenced him to 35 years in prison. The victim’s sister said the sentence brought the family a measure of justice and closure so they could remember his life rather than the details of his death.
If anyone knew Daniel or has information about the events that night, please share what you remember.
