Michael McIntyre was 20 when he was shot and killed by a Tallassee police officer on December 29, 2009. Officers were reportedly serving a warrant at a friend’s apartment where McIntyre was present; the warrant was not for him. A foot chase ended with McIntyre being shot.
Police described a shootout, but the family and the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP disputed that account. They said McIntyre was unarmed and was shot five times in the back while fleeing. An Alabama Bureau of Investigation report confirmed multiple gunshot wounds to his back and buttocks. Witnesses who spoke with the family’s representatives said they did not see a weapon. The family also alleged officers moved something from a vehicle to the location of his body.
McIntyre’s mother had previously sued the city over police misconduct involving her son, settling for $30,000 and prompting discipline of an officer. After the 2009 shooting the family, backed by the NAACP, sought federal review and filed a civil rights lawsuit; a grand jury in February 2010 declined to indict the officer. McIntyre was a father to two young daughters.
Did anyone in Tallassee see Michael on December 29, 2009, or have information about the events at the apartment that day?
