On the night of June 27, 1998, 29-year-old Moody Police Officer Keith Ashley Turner pulled over a stolen vehicle on County Highway 10 around 10:30 p.m. Turner, who had been with the Moody department for two months after nine months with the Southside Police Department, approached the car and was shot. One assailant, Mario Centobie, pretended to retrieve documents and produced a .45 caliber handgun, firing three shots. One struck Turner’s vest, a second hit his hip, and a third was a fatal wound to the back of his head. Backup arrived too late and the two suspects fled, prompting a manhunt.
One suspect was captured the next day; Centobie evaded capture until July 5, 1998, after kidnapping a man in a store parking lot and forcing him to drive before the victim escaped and alerted authorities. The two men were arrested and later sentenced. Turner is survived by his wife and child. If anyone knew Officer Turner or has information about the case, please share what you remember.
