On December 2, 1983, Anniston, Alabama’s postmaster Oscar Johnson, 49, was shot and killed inside the local post office during a workplace confrontation. The attacker was identified as 53-year-old postal employee James Howard Brooks, who entered the facility armed with a .38-caliber pistol and sought out Postmaster Johnson, fatally shooting him. Brooks then pursued his immediate supervisor up a flight of stairs and shot him twice, leaving the supervisor seriously injured but alive.
The motive reported for the attack was a long-simmering dispute Brooks had with post office management. Brooks was taken into custody and charged with Johnson’s murder and the attempted murder of the supervisor.
What additional details can anyone who knew Oscar or worked at the Anniston post office in 1983 share?
