Thomas Lee Campbell was 28 and serving as a Technical Sergeant with the United States Air Force Security Forces when he was shot and killed on the night of March 26, 1978. He had been dispatched to a residence in Maxwell Heights, off-base military housing near Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, after a report of an intruder. Within moments of his arrival fellow responders from Security Forces and the Montgomery Police Department heard gunfire and found Sergeant Campbell suffering from three gunshot wounds. He was taken to the base hospital but died of his injuries.
A search of the area led to the arrest of a 16-year-old male. The weapon was identified as a .22 caliber rifle and the teenager was tried and convicted of murder as a juvenile, remaining in custody until his 21st birthday. If anyone knew Sergeant Campbell or was in Maxwell Heights that night, can you share what you remember?
