On May 17, 2016, two young men were shot to death inside an apartment in Williston, North Dakota. Donzell Washington, 23, a Black man, and Diandre Laron Lott both died in the same incident that evening. The Williston Police Department investigated the double homicide and eventually charged one suspect, Lamar Putney, with two counts of murder in connection with the killings.
At trial, the defense argued Putney acted in self-defense after Washington and Lott allegedly tried to rob him when they came to look at a car he had for sale. The jury returned not guilty verdicts on all counts, and Putney was acquitted. No other suspects have been publicly identified and the case was closed following the acquittal.
Are there details about Washington, his movements that day, or witnesses in Williston who might add context to what happened?
